Himalayan Tibetan Wrathful Deity Wooden Mask – Hand-Carved and Polychrome

Himalayan Tibetan Wrathful Deity Wooden Mask – Hand-Carved and Polychrome

An impressive hand-carved Himalayan ritual-style wooden mask depicting a wrathful deity or protective guardian, featuring an elaborate composition and striking traditional iconography.

The mask displays a fierce expression with large, protruding eyes, a prominent third eye on the forehead, and a wide-open mouth revealing sharp fangs and intricately carved teeth. Its deep red surface is complemented by vibrant yellow ornamental eyebrows, dark detailing, and an elaborate crown adorned with five skulls.

In Tibetan Buddhist artistic traditions, wrathful deities are often represented with intimidating expressions, symbolising the destruction of ignorance, protection against harmful forces, and the transformation of negative energies. The skull crown and third eye are characteristic elements associated with this iconographic tradition.

Carved from wood and decorated with polychrome pigments, the mask displays visible surface wear, scratches, pigment losses, and an aged patina. The reverse reveals a hollowed interior with clearly visible carving marks and traces of traditional craftsmanship.

A visually striking decorative and collectible piece, suitable for display in a collection of Himalayan, Tibetan, Buddhist, or ethnographic art.
