A beautiful and substantial Ancient Roman terra sigillata bowl fragment dating to the 1st–2nd century AD, featuring a finely moulded rabbit in profile surrounded by elaborate decorative motifs.
The fragment preserves part of the shoulder of a decorated Roman bowl, displaying intricate scrolling tendrils, chevron patterns, ornamental ropework and finely detailed relief decoration. The distinctive rabbit motif is particularly charming, offering a fascinating glimpse into the naturalistic imagery employed by Roman potters.
Terra sigillata, commonly known as Samian ware, was among the most recognisable forms of fine tableware produced throughout the Roman Empire. Distinguished by its characteristic red surface and elaborate moulded decoration, it was widely distributed across Roman territories, particularly in Gaul, Italy and Britain.
Animal motifs, including rabbits, birds and other creatures, frequently appeared alongside floral and geometric ornamentation on decorated Samian vessels, reflecting the artistic tastes and everyday material culture of the Roman world.
The fragment retains its attractive reddish-brown surface, with clearly defined relief decoration. It has been carefully reconstructed from three original fragments, preserving an impressive section of the vessel's original decorative scheme.
An excellent example of Roman ceramic craftsmanship, suitable for an ancient art collection or display.
