Ancient Roman Glass "Eye Bead" – 1st–4th Century AD

A beautiful and well-preserved ancient glass bead featuring a striking black body with yellow ‘eye’ motifs. The bead is decorated with circular eye patterns and intersecting lines, designed as a form of protection against the evil eye – a common belief in the Roman world.

Such beads were prized both as adornments and amulets, and they were widely traded across the Mediterranean. This example shows fine workmanship and a pleasing patina from age and burial.

Culture: Roman

Date: ca. 1st–4th century AD

Material: Glass

Dimensions: approx. 2 cm wide

Weight: 5.3 g

String length: 17 in (modern cord for wear/display)

Condition: Very good, intact with expected surface wear and minor encrustations consistent with age.

Provenance: Acquired from a UK collection, originally sourced from the Mediterranean region.

A fine collector’s piece and an excellent example of protective Roman glasswork.
